1001 Spikes is an action plat former game that’s ridiculously hard and punishing. You get near infinite lives and all the time in the world, so be ready for dying and re spawning and retrying the same stage over, and over, until you finally get a trap’s timing just right, or perceive the path you’re actually suppose to take and finally progress another step on the pretty long list of levels. Each of the harder stages makes you work so hard, that it’s a totally awesome feeling when you finally figure things out and beat it, and that’s why this game is actually really good. It does help that it has excellent, solid controls, nicely drawn 8-bit graphics and a really good chip tune score.
The game play is simple enough. You enter a level, you avoid traps and make some jumps while also shooting knives at the occasional enemy. Find the key and perhaps the hidden mask object and make your way to the exit. You then repeat this process through longer and more difficult stages until you run out of things to do. Along the way expect plenty of water, fire, snakes, scorpions, crushing blocks, spikes and even more spiky spikes. There isn’t anything particularly original here if you have played similar games in the past (stretching a long way back) but what is here has been proven to work.
