Game Overview

The sprite work is beautiful. The music is catchy. The plot is… well they had to do some work to reconcile Blaster Master’s storied history of the localized story against the original Japanese story and while it is a bit clunky I do not think anyone will find fault with it. They did extremely well considering the goals they set about with. The problem is in the game play. Half the game is a side scroller in the giant platforming jump tank across large Metro id-style levels.

The platforming is almost all rote, boring, and completely devoid of challenge, speed, or satisfaction. Occasionally you park the tank and get out and walk around to support a platforming puzzle or two, but mostly you get out to enter a cave. The caves are the other form of play, a top down shooter that is almost too good of a throwback to the era: plodding, slow, simple… just as boring and simple as the platforming, the top down shooter segments offer almost nothing until the end of the game.
