Yooka Layee and the Impossible Lair is a pretty good game and redeems Play tonic as a competent developer. The problem is that while there’s a lot to like here, nothing in the game sticks out as different or unique. Levels lack distinction and backgrounds are lifeless with little depth despite a strong color palette. Now we have a 2.5D plat former that’s already competing with Trine 4 on release which has better puzzles and environmental design, and Unruly Heroes which has better combat and level variation. It doesn’t even compare to Donkey Kong Country despite having lots of similarities. Instead of a fast-paced, challenging plat former like DKC we get something more evened out in terms of difficulty (barely any curve) and overall something a lot more relaxing and comfy. Still fun and engaging though but it’s simply an above average plat former.
