Game Overview

This game does one thing quite well: Set design. The spooky Wayne Barlowe/H.R. Geiger/Zdzisław Beksiński alternate dimension that the game focuses on is, while not even slightly scary, still a delight to look at. It’s suitably unearthly, a bit reminiscent of the other world glimpsed in Hellraiser 2. At times, I think the designers may have been aware of this, as large portions are dedicated to nothing more than showcasing various scales of static models of various genital-related monstrosity. Plot, character, and writing are essentially nonexistent. The total number of personality traits among all named characters adds up to 1; The villain is “menacing”, and that’s it for defining any traits for anyone. There’s absolutely nothing in the dialogue to convey anything but the basic mechanics of advancing the game. I won’t say “advancing the plot,” because there isn’t one. Everything you learn from the moment you step in persists clear to the end. Not a single twist, expansion, revelation, or any other semblance of a story line occurs at any point. Don’t even bother seeing if you can dig up some kind of semblance of a story by digging under the rocks of various hidden journal entries.
