Game Overview
Bound by Flame was developed by Spiders, a small French developer, with obviously limited resources and budget. There’s no point in comparing it to some of the AAA Fantasy-RPG giants, one must look at it for what it is, an ambitious project from a small developer to enter a genre dominated by games from The Witcher, The Ender Scrolls and the Dragon Age series. Combat however is where things actually get interesting. While the core mechanics are again pretty standard, with your usual melee (both head on and sneak), ranged and magical based talents and abilities, Bound by Flame takes a quite unique take on enemies by giving them unusually high amount of hit-points.
Lore and story wise they seem to have decided to stick to the already well know and proven Fantasy concepts. There’s nothing revolutionary here, save for the demonic possession story line which ads a bit of extra to the mix. Still, it works, and we get a solid universe, with lots of bits and pieces of background info to be found through dialogues or journal entries. Writing on the other hand leaves a bit to be desired. While I enjoyed the majority of characters and usually found their backstories and motivations surprisingly well developed and believable, the dialogues were pretty much hit or miss, some of them being really out of place, especially during cut-scenes.
