Game Overview
Cthon as a shooter is very simple but enjoyable. It’s more Wolfenstein than Doom, and a bigger emphasis on exploring and gaining upgrades more than deep gun play. Environments, despite the simple Wolfenstein map layout, are surprisingly creepy, and the ambient music does a good job to keep me on edge, especially if at low health and wary of enemies. That said, the game isn’t without downsides. While I enjoy the creepy ambiance as background music, it can certainly make the game feel a bit boring when you know you cleared the current level of enemies. And there isn’t much variety in weapons, with the player only getting an incrementally better rifle, grenades, and a melee weapon. And of course, as a rogue like, it can feel a bit unfair at times. I’ve suffered many deaths even when playing on the easiest difficulty.
