Game Overview

Dark Devotion is a very enjoyable 2d action rpg with souls like combat and some minor rogue lite progression mechanics thrown into the mix. It manages to really nail down that dark and gloomy atmosphere, which consists of interesting narrative, beautiful pixel art and a soundtrack that often seems to perfectly complement the setting. That said, the game left a rather poor first impression as from the very start you notice that some quality of life features such as controls remapping and even in game volume settings are missing. First 30 minutes of the game play felt somewhat confusing and to a degree even frustrating, as the game does a poor job of explaining its core features and even leaves it up to players to discover how some of the essential controls work. When combined with a large and dark starting area that suffers from a severe overuse of instant death traps it seems like bit of a design oversight – one that may give players a false impression that the game is all about cheap difficulty.
