Progress is made by converting treasure cards you find during your runs into gold that you can spend on cards and heroes in the main menu. On paper this sounds great because you are free to spend your gold on whatever you want and unlock things in the order that you’d like to unlock them, but in practice I think it’s better to just gradually unlock things automatically using experience/scores like in other games of the same genre. I found myself overwhelmed when I had 400g to spend and nothing unlocked. I didn’t know where to start, and I didn’t want to just pick _anything_. So instead I just closed it and told myself “I’ll deal with that later.” Gradually introducing new mechanics is, I think, the best way to handle this rather than tell the user “hey here are all of the cards pick the best ones.”

Maybe instead use gold for cosmetics+one-run relics, and experience to unlock cards and heroes? Of course, the user could just unlock things left to right, but that’s not as fun as “oh new cards cool” it’s more like “oh, I get to click some more things this go around or read a bunch of stuff” and the reward quickly becomes busywork.
