Exception is a retro-style plat former which takes place inside the computer of a grandmother who – in a story sadly familiar to us all – simply could not resist clicking on a suspicious banner ad. Once her computer is overwhelmed by a tyrannical virus, it’s up to a heroic bot to break free of his programming and save the system by smashing the bits out of rampaging malware. There are plenty of retro-style platformers on the market, but Exception distinguishes itself by a unique presentation in which the levels form and re-form around the heroic robot as the player progresses through the level. Setting the game inside the abstract space of a computer allows for more abstract level design that is typically seen in this sort of genre – one particularly memorable boss all but tears the level to shreds chasing you, and got the better of me more times than I’d like to admit.
