Grand Ages Medieval is the successor of the Port Royal and Patrician series. In addition to trading, now you can fund cities and commission which city produces what. You have a maximum of 5 industries that you can set up in a city and a few dozen commodities. Some reviews were unhappy with the rather low number of resource types. However, this is not a game where you build a huge city or get to produce everything in one place. Every city starts really small and can get to being pretty big with the few dozen commodities you have here being enough probably, even too much at times since you can only produce five types in one city and you guessed it.
The people want them all so the objective is to get a good trade specialisation balance and for the way it’s designed the game is very good at this. The key here is sustainable development. You build a small town. You decide you want to start a new industry and build those buildings. Well now, all the extra workers there will want a bit of everything else so to support this colony you need your every other city to increase production for everything the colony doesn’t have. You build roads, hire merchants and increase cart capacity and plan routes. The route system is really good and when your cities are balanced, the merchants will just go around trading wares between them based on supply and demand and generating a profit for you.
