Kona is a survival game with a mystery-type story, set in the Canadian wilderness circa 1970. In it, you play as Carl, a private detective meeting with a wealthy industrialist named Hamilton. Of course, nothing is at it seems: Carl is soon in a car crash, and stuck in the frozen wilderness, in a tiny hamlet full of people frozen in ice. The game’s soundtrack is also quite creepy, with haunting strings and some wind instruments that really enhances the mood. Sound effects, however, are a bit hit and miss. Snow-covered footsteps and creaky doors rattling.

The first thing that struck me about Kona is that it is incredibly beautiful. The graphics are positively delightful to look at, from the frozen bushes swaying in the wind, to the wolf paw prints on the ground, to the cluttered inside of a general store. For a world with few living people, it felt very alive. Great care was placed by the developers down to the little details to make the setting pop. From chess games one move to completion, to an empty crib to half empty suitcases flung over a room, the game conveys a sense of eeriness that never lets up.
