LISA is polarizing by design, and simply playing through it’s introduction alone is enough to give you an understanding of why so many people never finish or play it at all. The plot is a pitch black, grim, and hopeless affair filled with only occasional forays into light heated and humorous territory. But the catch here is that these moments are designed to make the inevitable fall back down into the blackest pits of human cruelty imaginable even more devastating and impact. You see, while LISA is a deconstruction of many common JRPG tropes, it’s main deconstruction is that of a trope found in many forms of media, not just video games.
LISA isn’t perfect though. While it’s obvious that a lot of passion and care went into the game, the aspect of it that causes almost all of it’s problems is simply the engine itself, RPG Maker. RPG Maker is a widely used engine for a lot of indie games, mostly because it requires next to no scripting or coding, but unfortunately this comes at the cost of performance. Numerous bugs and optimization issues tend to plaque RPG Maker games, and LISA is no exception to this. Even in full screen, LISA will have black borders on the right and left hand side of the screen no matter what. Characters will sometimes be found floating in the air or simply stuck in the terrain.
