Moonlighter PC Game Overview

The combat sucks. It feels sluggish. Hits lack impact and have so many cool down frames you’d think you just did a Falcon Punch or something. Moves can’t be buffered and can’t cancel into other moves. The randomness of the dungeons adds nothing to the game (though it doesn’t take away from anything either). The purpose of randomness in rogue likes (like The Binding of Isaac), is to force players to work with what they have, and to reward consistency. I really can’t see a purpose behind the randomness here.

The shop aspect sucks too. You just guess-and-check prices until you get them right, and get penalized with grinding (either lower sales or lower money) if you guess wrong. Recettear had a base price for a reason — it lets you go right to the actually interesting decision of “how high can I push them before they walk away?” Recettear also tried to introduce other systems and do what it could to keep itself interesting. Moonlighter’s game play does nothing to build on itself. The villagers move too slowly, and the segment feels 2-3x as long as it needs to in relation to the decisions you’re making. Moonlighter misses its best opportunity to personify the villagers here too, making them into robots that dispense money and an emoticon. Get HITMAN 2.
