I’ve played a fair chunk of the games available in the genre. Initially combat is really poor, your ship gets very easily beaten and you’re often left wondering what to do next. As you level up and get to know the areas things begin to make more sense. You will always get the feeling that some areas of the game haven’t been developed as far as was originally intended – crafting for example, it works but it’s certainly not great. Some quests are broken but not that it breaks the game, just leaves the OCD sufferers with some loose ends. The story is mature, well written and has some highlights. There are sexist, racist and generally non-PC aspects but they are VERY accurate to the period. Lastly, the world that has been created, in a word: brilliant. Every town has it’s own feel, a fantastically rich population who go about their business in the best ‘dumb AI’ people I have yet experienced. The towns themselves create a wonderfully immersive atmosphere. Pirate towns feel completely different from government run towns. Perhaps the re-launch price was too high but it’s current pricing is accurate and massive value for money on sale. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good story and even more so for those who favor pirate RPGs. I had a blast, more entertainment than Black Flag and the Risen series.
