Game Overview
The first thing that initially struck me with Rocketbirds 2 is the switch from cartoon characters to 3D modeled characters. The hand-drawn nature of the first Rocketbirds I thought gave it a lot of charm and looked quite good to boot. With the switch to 2.5D backgrounds and 3D characters, it loses a lot of that and frankly looks a lot cheaper because of it. I’m not quite sure why the developer decided to switch styles but it was not a good move in my eyes. I also ran into the problem of occasionally finding it difficult to differentiate between the foreground and the background which led to some frustrating platforming.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. The game play here is still pretty solid and can be most favorably compared to the Shank series, consisting of platforming and shooting. Like the Shank series, in Rocketbirds, it’s crucial to use juggling to your advantage to both kill enemies and as a crowd control mechanic. Thankfully, this is just as enjoyable as the last game and you’re given even more weapons at your disposal. The jet pack sections make a return and are a nice change of pace that keep the pacing fresh and interesting.. You also get Pure Rock Crawling.
