Game Overview

This is a game that almost has it all. Shenmue’s story is very deep rooted, but the game play is definitely something else. I haven’t completed Shenmue 1 so don’t look for too much of a back story in this review. However, I did finish the game on the original xbox and am doing a second play through on steam. This is essentially an RPG which the player explores 3 different cities in China. There are main missions, minor side missions, and a lot of mini-games available for the player to try out. Shenmue 2’s game play is unique on its own. The premise is that the player’s father was murdered in Japan and Ryu (the protagonist) travelled to China to further find out about the mystery surrounding his father’s killer. There are many mini-games spread throughout the world of Shenmue. From arcade games that feature old Sega classics, work-based tasks to make money, to darts against all sorts of opponents, to street fights, to a multitude of gambling games in the form of cards, dice, or Plinko type games. Playing the game a second time, I’m honestly surprised as a kid I didn’t pick up on how much gambling is involved in such a game. The player isn’t required to gamble to make money and can choose to work, but it’s easy to get sucked into the world of making money quick. Be aware though, different mini-games have different odds when it comes to payout.
