Simulacra 2 is a game about searching through a victim’s phone, progressing through a decision-driven story, packed into a creepy horror atmosphere. It certainly trumps the first one in complexity and production value which is both a good and a bad thing at once: While it makes the game more realistic and strengthens the immersion while unraveling the story, it also results in overwhelming the player, especially in the beginning of the game where they are literally bombed with data they potentially need to analyse first before proceeding. The Horror aspect in this game felt way too short unfortunately, at least compared to Simulacra 1. Jump scares are literally predictable and all that creepy stuff that’s supposed to give you anxiety just sets the tone for the game’s atmosphere instead of dragging you into that terror. And I know that of course these aspects are different from person to person, that’s why all “horror” types can’t please everyone. However it really is a shame to see it coming so short, especially because Simulacra 1 showed that the devs are able to create an engrossing creepy atmosphere. But don’t get me wrong, the tone of this game itself is hit well nonetheless.
