For some reason, Stoic thought it was a good idea to add RNG element to the combat, which is fundamentally not build w/ RNG in mind in the first place. In the Banner Saga 1, the only RNG mechanic was the deflect, which you should be avoiding in the first place. The combat was punishing, but never frustrating because when you got punished, you understand why you got punished and most of times, it’s because of your own shortsightedness. Aside of worse combat, most of successful formula of the Banner Saga 1 are inherited, including, but not limited to: impactful decisions, excellent character development, decent story, great soundtrack and visual and so on. On the other hand, the game also inherits flaw of the first series, like hard to select units behind character, consequence of decisions feels random, pointless supply and clansman/fighter system and such. I still finished the game, enjoyed the game for the most part, and will likely to play & finish the Banner Saga 3 to see the end of the story but I simply cannot recommend the game because the best part of the first game was its combat system and it was mostly ruined.
