Game Overview

This game is a very typical JRPG with turn-based combat and a character building system like FF7 – it’s basically Materia but it’s called “Quartz” here. I think the Cold Steel games do a better job at explaining this system but if you understand Materia, you can understand Quartz. Apart from this, the game does NOT screw around at all when it comes to combat difficulty. Enemies WILL kill you, even on your first mission. They do enough damage to kill you in a few hits so watch the healing. Also I’d advise playing with a guide because there are many tiny decisions that influence how many “points” you get for missions.

And you probably want all of those points in the first run because replaying these games because you missed one or two points and now can’t get the ultimate weapon or something is… kind of a chore. Something I don’t particularly enjoy about these games is the way the female characters are treated. Yes, this game has a female Deuteronomy and at first you think “oh, that looks good” – then it turns out nobody takes her seriously and she’s more of a cautionary tale, while her adopted brother is the smart and cool-headed one.
