Game Overview
The Spectrum Retreat is albeit short but interesting puzzle game that also presents a rather cryptic narrative between puzzle sets, one that requires you to unravel as you play through it. It is a game that won Dan Smith, its creator, a BAFTA Young Designer’s award, and it certainly deserves it as a first outing. The puzzles are based on the use of swapping colors to represent locks or other means to activate certain devices. The device you carry holds one color that allows you to pass through fields of that color, but no others, so often puzzles require you to pass through several colored gates.
Arranging colors on objects in sight so that you can walk through each. Later puzzles introduce colored pads that pull you towards them if you have the right color, and pads that flip the room’s orientation. None of the puzzles are overly tricky, most seemingly having only one solution, and once you get the hang of it, its usually not to hard to find that solution. But they’re still good brain teasers.
