Fascinating game. The world is highly creative and extremely confusing. Half of the time I don’t have a clue what I am doing. But that works really well because I am essentially playing someone who has lost all his memories and is trying to figure out who and what he is – and who might possibly be a god. And now I am roaming a chaotic and bizarre world that seems to be a complete mess of shattered dimensions with a blob thingy, a glowing knight with the intelligence of an apple and a half-mad assassin who is sort of my sister as my companions. Tides is a very different type of RPG. The setting, story and atmosphere are weird, eerie and wonderfully unique. It is very narrative heavy which makes it feel at times like an interactive novel. But there is significant depth in its game systems and the choices you make that strongly influence the branching narrative and the outcomes. You can deep dive into old school ‘variable’ heavy character stats and abilities if you want but you actually don’t need to. If, like me, you tend to choose the ‘persuasion’ path in these games to avoid conflict you can go for long periods without fighting yet still feel you are having an impact on the game.
