Game Overview

Utawarerumono Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth are two halves of the same story and can’t really be broken up. Thus, I will be reviewing them as a whole. This is my favorite VN of all time. The story, characters, sound, art, world, and game play all come together to make something magical and I think a lot of other people- even those new to the genre- will be able to enjoy it as well so I’m just going to gush about it and hope that convinces you to try it. Overall, the story will take you about 80 hours to get through on your first go. It seems like a lot, but that time is used very effectively. The characters are organically built up and the way I got attached to them over time is something I’ve only really felt the likes of in the original Mass Effect trilogy. The world gets very fleshed out with both ancient secrets and more mundane details that make it a very rich, interesting place to be. The story takes its time setting up big scenes so they hit like a truck and then paces itself with more lighthearted moments like wannabe Robin Hood pitching gold bars through people’s windows or giving a cat girl a suggestive back rub or getting drunk and stupid with your bros. Then it’s back to political maneuvering, destiny, war-crimes, mesa Godzilla battles, and suffering.
