Simply demolishing your surroundings in sandbox mode would’ve been more than enough to hold me over, but the game’s campaign goes above and beyond being a glorified tutorial or afterthought, and winds up being an absolute FEAT! Not since PORTAL 2 have I had this much fun solving puzzles; not since PHANTOM PAIN has the planning, execution, and getaway felt as liberating; and not since… ever…? has destruction in video games come close to the likes of TEARDOWN. The multiplayer is so smooth, and they really did a good job at improving performance. I’ve been able to play with every lift running with 6 people in multiplayer and no issues.
The new snow system is also phenomenal! It looks a lot better and it is a lot less buggy. The open-ended nature of these puzzle box/heist/race-against-the-clock hybrid missions are a brilliant showcase of the game’s physics engine where you’re constantly met with these small interactions between you and the environment that feel like huge, gratifying “a-ha!” moments. I KNEW destroying things was going to be fun and look amazing but, in the context of these thought-out missions, it feels even more substantial than anticipated.
