Aeon’s End goes in a wildly different direction. SotM used static decks for pretty much everything. Each hero, villain, and environment will always have the same cards in it, every single time, period. But this is a deck builder. Each mage starts with a deck of exactly 10 cards, with all but one of them being weak and sad. But there’s a market, selling 9 different sorts of gems/ spells/ gizmos, and by spending crystals to buy from that, you add new, better cards to your mage’s deck, and you’ll try to remove some of the crappy starting cards. This is the core concept of a deck builder, but what makes this one so very special is the lack of randomness. Well, no, there is RNG.

It’s an amazing mechanic that works well for the game, but it also offers possibilities other deck builders dont. Think of SotM, right? One thing that many players enjoy in that is theory crafting just the right teams and variants, to fight the specific boss & environment that you’re going up against. You can do that same sort of thing here, with both your selection of mages, and your choices of what to have in the market.
