Blackthorn Arena was exactly what I was looking for after a return to the Spartacus series. The idea of running a luaus and developing these gods of the arena was highly interesting as a concept. Blackthorn Arena starts you off as a struggling lanista with a small stable of gladiators who must prove their value in the arena. After the small battle you take control of your father’s ludus and must restore it to it’s former glory. You do this though gladiatorial games which earn you coin, coin in which you invest in your gladiators and ludus. However the clock is ticking and you must train them quickly for the games will soon be upon you.

Game play is engaging and you’ll find yourself sinking a lot of time into your top stable of gladiators and finding the perfect combinations of solo, two-man, three-man and four-man teams to carry out the honor of your ludus. It also offers special areas such as a medicus, a smith, a cook, guards and other diversions. As well as a marketplace filled with three different cities to chose from.
