Game Overview

Tokyo Dark is a real mixed bag. The game suffers from sparse jump scares for the fist half of the game, being an extremely short experience of around four hours and having a clearly strained budget with a few rare bugs still existing. Animations are often reused and some are lacking sound effects. One particular object has no audio queue and is always shown from a specific angle to make it appear scary when you first see it. However as you show this object to other characters it may unintentionally startle you as it suddenly appears without warning the same way as when you first saw it. This could easily have been avoided by drawing a new, less creepy, image of the object or adding an audio queue to let the player know what their character is about to present.

The story is immersive but linear, until you reach different endings, as you will be accomplishing the same objective with only one or two non-critical choices at most being all that differs. These choices are still enjoyable but largely irrelevant to the plot. I didn’t encounter any game-breaking bugs that other reviews mention but I did have to manually close the game via Task Manager as it failed to launch correctly multiple times, usually after closing it and then attempting to reopen it without restarting Steam.
